Silpa Bhirasri was a pivotal figure and pioneer in the development of modern art in Thailand. This
statue of King Pinklao, depicted in religious-observance attire is among the works Professor Silpa
created during his tenure at the Fine Arts Department and belongs to the first series of royal sculptures
made following the King9s death. Of particular significance, it is the first known royal portrait of a
Thai monarch to depict the King in religious-observance attire, departing from the conventional
representation of monarchs in royal regalia. With its extremely limited production and distribution,
the work holds considerable historical significance, both as a representation of early modern art in
Siam and as an important work by Silpa Bhirasri, the father of modern art in Thailand.
