Theo Meier was a Swiss artist deeply drawn to
the cultures of Southeast Asia. He spent much of
his artistic life in Bali before settling in Thailand
in his later years, where he remained until his
death in 1982. His paintings often portray the
simple everyday lives of Asian women through
a distinctive warm palette and an individual
painterly style.

Le9 a Lafugie was a French painter with a profound
interest in Asian anthropology and culture. In the
late 1920s, she travelled throughout Southeast
Asia, including Thailand, seeking inspiration for
her work and subsequently presenting her
paintings in a solo exhibition in France. Although
this still life is executed according to Western
academic principles, its background incorporates
a Buddha image in the Thai traditional art style
alongside an Eastern-style dragon painting,
creating a subtle and profound dialogue between
Western aesthetics and the visual traditions of
the East.
